We read each service's own site on 27 Oct 2026. The list covers 2 kinds of service. Directories let you search profiles for free and contact the expert directly; experts pay to be listed. Referral firms take your case details, find candidates and screen them; most charge nothing until you retain an expert they present.

### Short answer: which should you choose?

- **Choose a free directory if** you know the discipline you need and have time to read CVs and call experts yourself.
- **Choose Expert Institute if** you want a published price and candidates within 5 business days.
- **Choose AMFS or Elite Medical Experts if** the case is medical malpractice and you want physician-screened experts.
- **Choose Round Table Group if** the case is complex commercial litigation that needs an academic expert.

### Directory or referral service: how they differ

A directory is a list. Experts pay a yearly fee to publish a profile, and attorneys search it for free. JurisPro charges experts $449 a year and Experts.com from $450. You do the vetting.

A referral service works the search for you. It asks about the case, finds candidates, checks conflicts and passes you a short list. TASA, Round Table Group and ForensisGroup say they charge nothing unless you retain or designate an expert they refer. None of the 3 publishes what it charges after that, so ask for the fee in writing before you engage.

**Free directory** — SEAK, JurisPro, Experts.com, ExpertPages and the Medrecords AI directory.
**Flat search fee** — Expert Institute publishes a single search from $3,500 and states it does not mark up expert rates.
**No fee until retained** — TASA, Round Table Group and ForensisGroup. The fee after retention is not published.

### The services, in detail

Order: free directories first, then referral services. Our own directory is listed first because it is free and needs no account; judge it on the same facts as the others. We did not hire an expert through any of these services. Every figure is what the service publishes on its own site, read on 27 Oct 2026.

### What the rules ask of your expert

Since 1 Dec 2023, Federal Rule of Evidence 702 says the party offering the expert must show the court it is more likely than not that the testimony will help the trier of fact, rests on sufficient facts or data, uses reliable methods, and applies them reliably to the case.

Under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 26(a)(2)(B), a retained expert's report must list every opinion with its basis, the facts or data considered, exhibits, qualifications with publications from the last 10 years, cases testified in over the last 4 years, and the compensation paid. Absent a court order, disclosure is due at least 90 days before trial.

Both rules turn on the facts and data the expert relied on. In injury and malpractice cases that means the medical record, so give the expert an organized, page-cited record early.

### How to vet an expert you found in a directory

1. **Read the CV against the issue** — Match the board certification and current practice to the exact medical question in the case.
2. **Pull prior testimony** — Ask for the Rule 26 list of cases from the last 4 years and read a transcript or 2.
3. **Search for exclusions** — Look for rulings where a court limited or excluded the expert under Rule 702.
4. **Run a conflict check** — Confirm the expert has not consulted for the other side or a related party.
5. **Agree the fee in writing** — Get the hourly rates for review, deposition and trial before you send the file.

### Send the expert an organized record

Expert review hours are billed by the hour, and the record is usually the largest part of the work. Medrecords AI turns a medical record into a deduplicated chronology with every line linked to its source page, so the expert spends time on opinions instead of sorting pages.

### Expert witness directories and services: common questions

#### What is the best expert witness directory?

For a free search, SEAK, JurisPro, ExpertPages and the Medrecords AI directory let attorneys search without a fee. SEAK lists over 2,000 experts with testimony history; the Medrecords AI directory lists 1,989 medical and technical experts and needs no account.

#### How much does an expert witness referral service cost?

Expert Institute publishes a single expert search from $3,500. TASA, Round Table Group and ForensisGroup say they charge nothing unless you retain or designate an expert they refer, but do not publish the fee after that. Ask for it in writing.

#### Is the SEAK expert witness directory free?

Yes for attorneys. SEAK states the directory is free to search and use, with no rate markups or referral fees. Experts pay to be listed.

#### Is JurisPro free for attorneys?

Yes. JurisPro runs a free online directory and will look for an expert for you free of charge if you cannot find one. Experts pay $449 a year to list.

#### Where can I find a medical expert witness?

For a free search, use a directory and filter by specialty and state. For a physician-screened referral, AMFS and Elite Medical Experts focus on medical cases only, and AMFS offers a free case review with a physician medical director.

#### What must an expert witness report include?

Under FRCP 26(a)(2)(B): every opinion with its basis, the facts or data considered, exhibits, qualifications with publications from the last 10 years, cases testified in over the last 4 years, and the compensation paid.
