Medrecords AI vs Claude for Healthcare

Claude for Healthcare is a general AI platform you configure on Claude Enterprise or the Claude Platform. Medrecords AI is a chart review product with a fixed output. Both publish BAA paths and source tracing, so the real differences are file size, who builds the workflow and how you pay.

Can you use Claude for a chart review?

Yes, on the right plan, and with work on your side. Anthropic offers HIPAA-ready setup on Enterprise only: Team and individual plans cannot enable it. Claude takes PDFs up to 1,000 pages, with visuals read only in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer, so a long scanned chart is the first thing to test. You design the workflow. Medrecords AI ships 1: it removes duplicates, builds a chronology with each entry linked to its page and flags gaps, at 10 cents a deduplicated page.

Which Claude plan can hold PHI?

The plan decides this. Anthropic limits HIPAA-ready setup to Enterprise, and PHI may go only through features the BAA covers.

Each cell states the fact and where it came from. "Not published" means we read Anthropic's pages and found no such statement; it does not mean Claude can't do the task. Claude is a capable general model, and you can configure it to deduplicate or build a chronology. Anthropic does not publish those as a product with a stated result.

Short answer: which should you choose?

  • Choose Claude for Healthcare if your organization wants 1 AI platform across prior auth, appeals, care coordination and in-house tools, and has people to configure it.
  • Choose Claude Enterprise if your hospital already licenses it and chart work is a small share of the use. Keep PHI to the features the BAA covers.
  • Choose Medrecords AI if you are a physician or a small team with a chart of 1,000 pages or more behind a standard of care review, an IME report or a risk management review, and you want the workflow finished on day 1.

Where Claude beats us, and where we win

Where Claude is stronger

  • Breadth. Claude does far more than chart work: appeals, triage, drafting, analysis and code. Medrecords AI does not.
  • You can build on it. Connectors, sample skills and the Developer Platform let your team shape any workflow, including chart reviews.
  • Named connectors. PubMed, CMS Coverage Database, ICD-10 and NPI Registry.
  • Self-serve BAA. An Enterprise primary owner can enable HIPAA-ready setup and accept the BAA without a sales cycle.
  • Large context. Anthropic publishes a context window of up to 1M, varying by model.

Where Medrecords AI is stronger

  • Finished workflow. Duplicates out, dated chronology in, each entry linked to its page, with nothing to configure.
  • File size. 50,000-page files, against Claude's published 1,000-page PDF limit.
  • It shows what is absent. Missing records and conflicting entries are flagged by default.
  • No seat minimum. 1 physician pays by the page. Claude's HIPAA-ready path starts at 20 seats.
  • On-prem. Enterprise On-Prem runs inside your network, so nothing leaves it.

Verdict

Pick Claude for Healthcare if

You want a general AI platform with a BAA, you have people to configure it, and chart review is 1 use among many.

Pick Medrecords AI if

You have a long chart to review and sign against, and you want the chronology, duplicate removal and gap flags working on the first file, at a published price per page.

Claude is a strong general model, and this page does not argue otherwise. Medrecords AI itself uses Anthropic models as a backup. The choice is between building a chart workflow on a platform and buying 1 that exists.

Key takeaways

  • Anthropic limits HIPAA-ready setup to Enterprise. Team and individual plans cannot enable it, so do not put PHI on them.
  • Claude publishes source tracing: "Answers can be traced back to the source." Check for yourself whether that reaches the page level on your chart.
  • Claude takes PDFs up to 1,000 pages, with visuals only at 100 pages or fewer. Medrecords AI takes 50,000-page files, including scans and handwriting.
  • The HIPAA-ready floor is $400 a month plus usage: 20 seats at $20. Medrecords AI is 10 cents a deduplicated page, with no seat minimum, and your first case is free.
  • Medrecords AI uses Anthropic and OpenAI models as a backup. We name that on our subprocessors page. This comparison is about the workflow around the model.

Who should choose which

Choose Claude when

  • You want 1 platform. Prior auth, appeals, care coordination, message triage and internal tools in 1 contract.
  • You have builders. Someone on staff will configure skills and connectors and maintain them.
  • You already license Enterprise. The extra cost of a chart task may be only usage.
  • You want PubMed in the same chat. The connector is published.

Choose Medrecords AI when

  • You will testify or sign. In a standard of care review or a causation opinion, you have to find the page behind each fact when asked at deposition.
  • You write IME reports. The file ends in a draft IME report built from your dictation and the record.
  • You work in hospital risk management or quality. A case review needs a dated timeline, gaps and conflicts, in a file your team can open and check.
  • You are 1 reviewer with no IT team. There are no seats to fill and nothing to configure.

How each one works

How Claude for Healthcare works

Healthcare customers reach Claude through Claude for Enterprise and the Claude Platform. On Enterprise, the primary owner enables HIPAA-ready setup and accepts the standard BAA, which cannot be modified. The change is one-way and resets some settings. Features then fall into covered, available but not covered, and disabled, and PHI may go only through covered features.

Connectors add PubMed, CMS coverage, ICD-10 and the NPI Registry. Sample skills such as prior authorization review are starting points to customize. Individuals on U.S. Pro and Max plans can connect their own records through HealthEx and Function in beta. Anthropic says "We do not use users' health data to train models."

How Medrecords AI works

You upload the chart: PDFs, scans, handwriting and DICOM, up to 50,000 pages. Medrecords AI removes duplicates, then builds a dated chronology and summaries with each line linked to its source page. It flags missing records and conflicting entries. You review, revise and sign. It does not retrieve records or sign opinions.

For an IME physician, the file ends in a draft IME report. Exports come in DOCX, PDF and HTML with live source links. It costs 10 cents a deduplicated page, down to 5 cents at volume, with a BAA at signup.

How Medrecords AI and Claude differ

6 questions a physician or risk manager should ask, answered from what each company publishes.

Medrecords AI cross-examination prep on a demo case, each point tied to its source page

Does Claude link each fact to the page in the chart?

Anthropic says answers can be traced back to the source and that Claude shows where answers came from. It does not publish how fine that link is on a long chart. Medrecords AI links every chronology entry and answer to its source page. Ask for the page behind 20 facts on a de-identified file and check them.

Can I upload a patient's chart?

On a HIPAA-ready Enterprise plan with the BAA accepted, through covered features only. Team and individual plans cannot enable HIPAA, so do not upload PHI there: that is a plan with no BAA. Medrecords AI signs a BAA at signup, with no seat minimum.

What about a 5,000-page merged packet?

Claude rejects PDFs over 1,000 pages and advises splitting them. Between 101 and 1,000 pages it reads text only, so test a scanned chart first. Medrecords AI handles 50,000-page files at about 100 pages a minute and resumes if interrupted.

What happens to duplicate pages?

Anthropic does not publish a deduplication step, though you could configure 1. Medrecords AI removes duplicates before review and does not bill for them.

Will it tell me what is missing?

Anthropic does not publish missing-record or contradiction flags as a feature. Medrecords AI flags a visit or test mentioned in a note with no record of its own, and entries that disagree on a date or finding. For a standard of care review, an absent record can change the opinion.

Who builds and maintains the workflow?

On Claude, your team writes the prompts and skills, then rechecks them when models change. On Medrecords AI, we do. You trade flexibility for a fixed output: if you want a workflow we do not offer, Claude gives you room to build it.

Pricing on a real file

Medrecords AI prices by the deduplicated page, and duplicates are not billed. Anthropic prices Claude by plan or seat, so the 2 only line up once you pick a file.

Medrecords AI at 10 cents a deduplicated page
$160
Medrecords AI at 5 cents, volume rate
$80
Claude Enterprise, not priced per page
$400 a month plus usage

Medrecords AI bills 1,600 deduplicated pages on this file. Claude Enterprise prices by seat and usage, so its line shows the 20-seat floor and no estimate of usage on this file.

File sizeMedrecords AI at 10 centsMedrecords AI at 5 cents (volume)Claude Enterprise

10,000 pages$1,000$500$400 a month at the 20-seat minimum, plus usage

$400 is 20 seats at US$20, billed annually. Usage is on top at API rates, and we will not estimate it for your file. If your organization already licenses Enterprise, the extra cost of 1 chart may be only usage.

Where Medrecords AI differs

Feature: the gaps, not only the summary

A summary that reads well can still hide a missing MRI report. Medrecords AI flags missing records and contradictions, so the file shows what is absent as well as what is there.

Job: the chart, not the whole organization

Claude for Healthcare is broad, and that is its strength. Medrecords AI does not run prior auth, triage messages or host your internal tools. It reads the record and builds the file you review.

Disclosure: we use these models too

Every AI model request at Medrecords AI goes through OpenRouter, mostly to open-source models, with Anthropic and OpenAI as a backup. Those requests run under BAA with zero retention and no training. The list is on our subprocessors page. So do not read this page as a claim that our models beat Anthropic's. The difference on offer is the chart workflow around the model.

FAQ

Is Claude HIPAA compliant?

Anthropic offers HIPAA-ready setup on Enterprise only, with a BAA. Team and individual plans cannot enable it. Even on Enterprise, PHI may go only through the features the BAA covers.

Can Claude do a chart review?

Anthropic names chart reviews among the things startups build on its Developer Platform, and Claude can read records you upload within its file limits. There is no published chart review product with a fixed output, so you would configure the workflow and check it.

Did you test Claude for this page?

No. This is not a benchmark. We have not run the same records through both tools, so this page makes no accuracy claim about either. It compares what each company publishes, read on 4 Nov 2026.

Does Medrecords AI use Anthropic models?

Yes, as a backup. Every AI model request goes through OpenRouter, mostly to open-source models, with Anthropic and OpenAI as a backup, under BAA with zero retention and no training. The list is on our subprocessors page.

What is the cheapest way to use Claude with PHI?

Enterprise at US$20 a seat a month, billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum, which is $400 a month plus usage at API rates. The API is a separate route that needs its own BAA and a team to build on it.

How much does Medrecords AI cost?

10 cents a deduplicated page, down to 5 cents at volume. Duplicates are not billed, credits never expire and your first case is free.

How this comparison was built

  • We make Medrecords AI and wrote this page, so we are a party to the comparison. Both columns follow the same evidence rules, the same visual treatment and the same depth.
  • Every claim carries 1 of 4 labels: tested (nothing on this page is), vendor-stated, third-party (none here) or not published.
  • Facts about Claude come from Anthropic's own pages, listed under Sources with the date read. The Medrecords AI column comes from our pricing page and product pages.
  • This is not a benchmark. We have not run the same records through both tools, so the page makes no accuracy claim about either one.

Vendor facts were last read on 4 Nov 2026, and Anthropic changes these pages often. If a figure about Claude is out of date, write to aj@medrecords.ai and we will correct it.
