Which files can you upload to Medrecords AI?
Medrecords AI accepts PDF files, scanned images in PNG or JPG, DICOM imaging, Word files and plain text. You can also add a ZIP file. The app opens the ZIP in your browser before anything is uploaded or charged. Word and text files are turned into PDF first, and you pay for the pages of that PDF.

Supported file types
| Type | File endings | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| The main format. Scanned PDFs are fine. | ||
| Images | .png, .jpg, .jpeg | Photos and scans of single pages. |
| DICOM imaging | .dcm | Found even when the file has no ending. |
| Word | .doc, .docx | Turned into PDF, then counted by PDF pages. |
| Text | .txt, .md, .markdown | Turned into PDF, then counted by PDF pages. |
| ZIP | .zip | Opened in your browser. The files inside are checked one by one. |
Other formats are not on the list. If your scans are TIFF files, save them as PDF first.
How ZIP files are handled
You do not need to unzip records yourself. When you add a ZIP, the app does this before it uploads anything:
- It opens the ZIP on your own computer, in the browser.
- It takes the files out and checks each one like a normal upload.
- It opens a ZIP inside a ZIP 1 level deep. Deeper ZIPs are left out, and the app tells you why.
- It skips system clutter, such as hidden files that computers add to folders.
- It keeps the folder names in the file name. A file in Records, then 2023, shows as "Records - 2023 - MRI.pdf".
- It never treats a Word file as a ZIP, even though Word files are built like one.
A single selection can hold up to 10,000 files and 2 GB. Above that, the app asks you to unzip the file on your computer and add the files in smaller groups. A ZIP with a password cannot be opened. Only that ZIP fails, and the rest of your files still go through.
Duplicate files
If you add the same file twice, even under 2 different names, the app spots it when you select the files. It does this before anything is uploaded, so you are not charged twice. Read more about how duplicates are removed.
Scanned and handwritten pages
Scanned pages are read with OCR. Read more about OCR in Medrecords AI. Clear, straight scans give the best text. Handwritten notes are harder to read for any tool. Check key facts from handwritten pages against the source page before you rely on them.
Imaging
The app spots DICOM files by their content, so a scan with no file ending still counts as imaging. See secure DICOM sharing for how imaging is stored and shared.
Before you upload
- Put all the records for 1 claimant in 1 case.
- Pick the case type first. See choose the right case type.
- Add the files or the ZIP, then review the page count and the cost before you confirm.
